Sound Navigation and Ranging (or SONAR) is a technique used the measure the proximity of an obstacle from the sensor which draws its inspiration from nature, a couple of examples of which can be bats and dolphins.

As obvious as it can get, the VCC and GND pins are there to power up the device while the Trig and Echo are the digital I/O pins.

The distance of an object from the sensor is found out by taking into account the speed of sound and the time it takes for the pulse between when it leaves the transmitter (via the Trig pin) and arrives back at the receiving end of the module (via the Echo pin) in the form of an 8-cycle pulse train. Taking the product of the sound speed and the pulse travel duration and dividing the whole thing by two tells how far the target is.
